Stepping back into the spotlight following the debut success of his Just Kids mixtape, Stevan returns today with Impress You, out via Honeymoon / +1 Records (America) & Astral People Recordings (ROW). Enlisting the production touch of LUCIANBLOMKAMP (6LACK, Mallrat) and joining forces with creative director Michael Dole (Flume, The Avalanches), Stevan’s new chapter plunges into his most open and intimate work to date, both in sound and substance.
Impress You kicks into pace with a tripping beat which signifies a new sonic direction, rooted in darker synth work and alt-R&B influences. Mirroring his maturation and versatility, the track sees Stevan refine his woozy, sun-sprinkled sound to bring rich, velvety vocals and introspective words to the front. The song sees him speak candidly on the pressures of pleasing others while journeying to find his truest self. Utterly transparent, this slick offering amplifies Stevan’s far-reaching acumen from dreamlike modes to complex, modern production that exists deep in a league of its own.
Stevan says on the single: “Impress you was one of the first tracks that I made with Lucianblomkamp. I speak on my experiences with overcoming social pressure and finding myself. It’s probably my most personal song to date.”
Multi-instrumentalist, artist and producer, Stevan found instant success with his first official single Timee, which garnered wide support from triple j, Spotify and Apple Music flagship playlists, plus earned him the titles of FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week, triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and MTV’s Upload of the Week. From there, a collection of warm, cinematic singles laid the path to his debut mixtape, Just Kids, cementing his spot among leading innovators in Australian music and as a globally-recognised breakthrough act. Now sitting on over 5 million streams, Just Kids has seen praise from NME Australia, Clash, The Independent (UK) and BBC Radio 1, plus was named FBi Radio’s Album of the Week and took out the #1 spot in the EP Top 5 on BBC 1xtra with Jamz Supernova.
On the stage, Stevan first impressed crowds at BIGSOUND 2019 with his handful of single releases, before bringing his infectious personality and chilled rhythms to Sound On, Panama and Fairgrounds festivals. Stevan debuted as a supporting act along tours with Winston Surfshirt and Omar Apollo, and has most recently performed as part of virtual festivals Isol-Aid and Ticketmaster’s Together Fest. Stevan’s greatest achievement to date is still to come, as a debut Splendour in the Grass set remains on the horizon in 2021.
